​This workshop focuses on writing poems that use art--whether it be painting, sculpture, photography or film--as a point of departure for the poem itself. It is a rich tradition that exploded in popularity among twentieth-century/contemporary poets. The focus of the workshop will be on seeing the artwork anew, not simply paraphrasing it in the poem, but using it as the starting point for a new and different poetic creation by exploiting the particular linguistic resources of poetry.

 

Participants should bring, if at all possible, a smartphone or internet-enabled device, to use to identify a particular artwork to write on, and of course, some kind of apparatus to write with. The workshop will be approximately two hours long.
